New Bedford City Council Flexes Political Muscles [OPINION]
Members of the New Bedford City Council are outraged with Mayor Jon Mitchell and his positions on public safety. Recent fires and shootings are motivating them.
Mayor Mitchell hasn t been able to successfully negotiate a contract with either the police or firefighter unions for years. Year after year has gone by and the tensions between the first responders and the former federal prosecutor have grown in part because of the unsettled contracts.
The city has recently experienced a rise in fires and criminals firing off illegal guns. Just after Thanksgiving, a man allegedly killed a person and nearly killed another with a stolen pistol. That suspect later attempted to kill four police officers in the city. A few weeks ago, a police officer s apartment was shot eight times and the suspect is still on the loose.

Izaak Vincent Kemp, 35, admitted to unauthorized possession of some 2,500 pages of classified information taken from the Air Force National Air and Space Intelligence Center.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said the city will soon apply for a federal SAFER grant to help the New Bedford Fire Department “transition from a rough period financially for the city.”
Mitchell also told WBSM host Barry Richard on Wednesday that local fire union officials have been overstating the city’s reliance on mutual aid from surrounding communities during major structure fires in New Bedford.
“It’s the kind of thing you hear from the fire unions. It’s one big union, they re pressing their case for not doing as much coverage as they d like,” said Mitchell, who cited statistics from the New Bedford Fire Department that he said show mutual aid calls having decreased in recent years.

DAYTON A former contractor with the Air Force Research Lab has pled guilty to illegally taking over 2,500 pages of classified documents.
Fairborn resident Izaak Vincent Kemp pled guilty in US District Court Thursday to taking over 100 documents classified at the Secret level from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, according to the office of David DeVillers, U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of Ohio.
Kemp, 35, was charged on Jan. 25 by a Bill of Information.
According to court documents, Kemp was employed as a contractor at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) from July 2016 to May 2019, and later as a contractor at the U.S. Air Force National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC). While working at AFRL and NASIC, both located at Wright-Patterson, Kemp had Top Secret security clearance, DeVillers’ office said.
